(Monkshood; Wolfsbane) Spikes of attractive poisonous, helmet-like, cerulean blue flowers make a majestic tall border and garden background. Its toxic nature, attributed to a compound called
aconitine
, has been known since ancient times. The agent, was extracted and used to coat arrowheads in battle and hunting. Take caution as the entire plant is poisonous. Can be used as a sedative only under medical supervision. Sow in rich, moist, well-draining soil in full sun to part shade. Seeds need a cold cycle and are difficult to germinate, so care must be taken. Note that even seeds are poisonous. Tolerates deer and rabbits, but not drought. Ht 24-48in (60-120cm); Spread 12-18in (30-45cm).
