Was once grown as an ornamental herb since being introduced to North America from Europe in the mid 1800’s, for its bright yellow pea-like flowers. Has now escaped gardens and found today growing prolifically all over the world, especially Great Britain, Ireland and Western North America, easily spotted growing in disturbed areas. Was once used as a diuretic as well as a remedy to strengthen the heart but care must be taken, as large doses can respiratory paralysis. Green, yellow and olive dyes can be produced from its flowers and stems. Careful to contain this herb, as it will grow and spread rapidly. Height 1-3 metres.
