(Bead tree) A beautiful round crowned tree, native to China and India mainly used as a source of brown to dark red hardwood; Commonly cultivated in southern U.S. Also known as bead tree as dried berries were once used for rosaries and other beaded products. Bark was used as an emetic and to expel worms. Careful as fruits are toxic to humans. Hardy along southern B.C. coast and will grow in a variety of soil conditions. Toxicity is useful against pests, as the dry berries can be used to make a natural pesticide. Can grow up to 30-50 feet tall.
