Purple Dead-Nettle
Lamium purpureum
Uses: Medicinal Duration: Annual
When to Sow: Spring Ease of Germination: Easy
(Purple archangel) Attractive beeplant and medicinal herb in the mint family, native to Eurasia and naturalized in North America, with purple-tinged foliage and purple-red flowers that appear in early spring. Unlike its nasty distant cousin, the stinging nettle, it doesnt sting but instead has fuzzy spade shaped leaves. Remarkable for both its nutritional and medicinal value! The entire plant is edible, and can be used like any green. Considered to be anti-inflammatory, diuretic, diaphoretic, astringent and styptic. Flowers and foliage stop bleeding when applied topically. Is said to have benefit for seasonal allergies when leaves are dried and brewed into a tea. Dead nettle thrives in full sun – part shade and a variety of soil conditions. Make sure it is controlled as it is an aggressive spreader, going to seed early in the season! Height 0.5-2.5 feet.
