Desert Rose
Adenium obesum
Uses:
Medicinal/Poisonous!
Duration:
Perennial
(hardy in zones 10-11+)
An African succulent with a vibrant display of pink flowers, once used to make arrow poison for hunting game. Poisonous root sap has over 30 cardiac glycosides that work like digitalis, causing heart failure. The roots or bark were once used to treat venereal disease, skin diseases, and to kill lice and other skin parasites. The latex was applied to decaying teeth and infected wounds. It develops a large swollen trunk which adds to the exotic appeal of the plant and is a perfect candidate for a bonsai. Given full sun for at least 6 hours per day, blossoms will proliferate all summer long. Makes an excellent indoor houseplant that can be placed outdoors to enjoy the sun in the summer months. Be sure to plant in very well drained cactus potting mix and careful not to overwater, as the desert rose is susceptible to root rot, which can rapidly kill the plant. Drought tolerant. Can grow up to 6 feet if given the proper conditions.
