Gotu Kola
Centella asiatica
Uses: Culinary/Medicinal Duration: Perennial (hardy in zones 8-10)
(Pennywort) Sourced from tropical regions of India, this small creeping plant is one best known for its use in ayurvedic medicine as a brain tonic. Its chemical constituents prevent plaque formation in Alzheimers, protect the brain from oxidative stress as well as protect nerves from dopamine toxicity in Parkinsons. Research supports its ethnomedicinal value as a treatment of burns, wounds, scars and varicose veins as the presence of triterpenoid compounds stimulate the development of connective tissue. It is also used traditionally by populations in Nepal, Malaysia, Bangladesh, India, Fiji, Madagascar and Brazil to improve memory, treat dysentery, heal fractures, treat rheumatism and control hypertension. Can be chopped and used in salads, stir fries and soups as well as brewed into a tea. Thrives in damp, rich, shady environments. May be necessary to enclose plants in plastic bags during dry winter months. Stems grows up to 15 cm long.
