(Zicao; Purple gromwell; Redroot gromwell) Incredible healing plant from China! Chinese herb used for thousands of years for wounds, burns, frostbite, eczema, hemorrhoids, and even tumours and cancer. The secret of its healing power are the purple pigments found in the dark red roots. Those pigments happen to belong to a class of compounds called shikonins which have a vast range of effects on the body. Shikonins explain why the roots have powerful anti-inflammatory and wound healing properties. They also protect cartilage in rheumatoid arthritis and help to prevent diabetes and obesity by regulating the way the body processes sugar. Shikonins play key roles in the plant‘s antiviral, antimicrobial, and antitumour effects. Extracts from this plant are now used in commercial skin creams. Easy to grow in well-drained soil in sun or part shade. Ht. 45-90cm/18-36"
