Also known as tropical guava, this shrub or small tree in the myrtle family is native to tropical areas from southern Mexico to northern South America. In India, China, Pakistan and Bangladesh, infusions or decoctions of the leaves are used to relieve rheumatism, diarrhea, diabetes and cough. Used as a gargle for mouth ulcers in Southeast Asia and an antibacterial in Nigeria. Also used topically as a poultice to heal wounds. Sweet, juicy and flavourful fruits are delightful when eaten fresh, used in jellies and preserves. Rich source of vitamins A, B and C. Plant in full sun and in heavy clay to light sandy soils. Seeds take about 2-8 weeks to germinate and boiling in water for 5 minutes or soaking in water for 2 weeks before planting is recommended to improve germination. Note that seed grown guavas can take years to bear fruit.
