Indigo thrives in tropical environments. Used as a dyeplant since ancient times and is still popular today. Indican is extracted from leaves and undergoes a fermentation process to produce a brilliant blue dye. It is especially valuable as an eco-friendly alternative to synthetic dyes. Its value is certainly not limited to textile coloring. Recent research has observed its profound antibacterial antioxidant and cytotoxic effect. Plants need a long growing season. Seeds can be germinated and kept in a cold frame for transplant in the spring. Locate in full sun or light shade. Drought tolerant. Ht 3-4ft (90-120cm).
