White Mugwort
Artemisia lactiflora
Uses: Medicinal Duration: Perennial (hardy in zones 3-8)
When to Sow: Spring/Late Summer/Early Fall Ease of Germination: Easy
White mugwort is an attractive, non-aggressive variety of Artemisia that builds a woodsy backdrop of deep green foliage and produces cream coloured aromatic florets that can be dried and used for potpourri. Aroma is resinous and camphorous. Flowers appear late in the season (August to September) and are guaranteed to draw in butterflies. This particular variety is a significant medicinal herb in China used as a remedy to treat menstrual and liver conditions and is considered to be a bitter tonic. Its anti-tumor and antioxidant activity of its areal parts has been demonstrated in recent research. In addition to its medicinal use, white mugwort makes beautiful cut and dried flower arrangements. Plant in sandy, loamy or clay well draining moist soils. Note that flowers are sterile and can only be grown by seed, propagation or root division. Prefers full sun to part shade. PH tolerant. Prune back to its base each autumn to prepare for the next season. Drought, deer, and rabbit tolerant. Ht 4-5ft; Spread 1.5-2ft (45-60cm).
