The red raspberry is not only a delicious native fruit, its leaves are medicinal, useful for painful menstruation and diarrhea. It belongs to a group of thorny plants commonly referred to as brambles. Its use in medicine was documented by the Greeks and Romans, and it played an important role in traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine. The Cherokee and Cree used a tea of the leaves to prepare the uterus for childbirth and to help recover after birth. The tea controls contractions while minimizing blood loss It is also useful as an astringent for treating diarrhea and leukorrhea on account of its high tannin content. Easy to grow in any sunny spot. Ht. 90-120cm (3-4ft).
