Sandalwood
Santalum album
Uses: Aromatic/Medicinal Duration: Perennial (hardy in zones 11+)
Ease of Germination: Difficult
(Indian sandalwood) The fragrant heartwood of this Indian tree is the source of one of the world’s most highly prized perfume oils. Known since at least the fifth century B.C. it has great spiritual and cultural significance, especially in India. But over the centuries wild populations became so depleted that the tree is now a protected species. Increasingly the tree now is cultivated in India and elsewhere, but it takes 25-30 years to reach a harvestable size. The trees are hemisparasitic which means they need to feed off the roots of nearby host plants. Even when conditions for germination are ideal the seeds appear sporadically over a period as long as a year.
