(Beggarticks; Swamp Marigold) This showy species is native to eastern North America where it is found in wet meadows, marshes and swamps. The Seminoles of Florida used the roots and the whole plant to treat eye conditions, headache, high fever, body aches, chills, and diarrhea. Related species are used in Chinese traditional medicine for similar conditions. Recently the use of Bidens species, including this one, was patented as a skin anti-aging topical treatment for "wrinkles, fine lines, thinning skin, sagging skin, skin dryness, and skin itchiness." According to the patent the treatment results in a "more youthful appearance of aged skin." In moist areas of the garden this hardy annual or biennial will reseed itself freely and persist year after year.
