Caterpillar Plant
Scorpiurus muricatus
Duration: Annual
When to Sow: Spring Ease of Germination: Easy
(Prickly caterpillar; Scorpion’s tail) This is a weird food plant that is found around much of the Mediterranean. As the seedpods develop they become contorted and hairy, and if you did not look twice you would swear that you have an outbreak of caterpillars in your garden. Like real caterpillars, they are edible. They can be eaten raw or cooked, or they can just be added to salads as a prank to see how the guests react. It turns out that this nitrogen-fixing plant has potential as a forage plant for animals. They love to eat the highly nutritious leaves. Grows as a ground cover.
