Planting: seeds require stratification, 1-2 months warm, then 1-2 months cold, then sow in spring. Common nursery practice is to sow without stratification in outdoor seed beds in fall. Seedlings shaded for 2-3 years and fertilized with manure. Seedlings transplanted to permanent location when 7-8 years old. Trees kept short (2m) and spaced close (2-3m) in commercial plantations for medicinal leaf production; otherwise allowed to grow higher and spaced further for seed production. Slow growing. Leaves harvested in early fall as they begin to turn yellow; dried in sun. Fruits harvested late fall, seeds cleaned and roasted.
