Planting: growers prefer rootlets over seeds because they are more reliable and quicker to harvestable size (3 years); however, seed quality has improved recently and cost of seeds is much less than rootlets. Seeds take 5-6 years to get harvestable roots. Seeds must not dry out; must be sown immediately after harvest in late summer to come up following spring. Avoid straw mulch and fertilize lightly.
Field spacing: 15-40cm between rows x 15-30cm within rows.
Yield: 900-2300kg/ha (year 3-6).
Pests: slugs
Diseases: alternaria, phytophthora, rhizoctonia, botrytis leafspot, fusarium.
Buyers want: min. alkaloids 3.5%.

Planting: for potted plant production, best to start with rootlets. Pot up rootlets 4 weeks before sale. Provide cool, shaded, and well-ventilated conditions; will not tolerate full sun and high humidity.
