Sowing rate: 3-6kg/ha (indirect).
Planting: lavandins (L. x intermedia; e.g. 'Provence' and 'Grosso'), best for commercial flower and oil production, are propagated vegetatively only. Only english types are available in seed form, but seed grown material may not be uniform enough for field production. Direct sowing not recommended; germination is too slow (15-30 days). Sow in seedflats 12-16 weeks before outdoor planting; transplant to plugs at 4-6 weeks, then transplant to field.
Field spacing: 60-120cm between rows x 25-120cm within rows.
Yield: dry flower 500-1500kg/ha (years 2-5), oil 8-32kg/ha (years 2-5).
Pests: caterpillar, nematode
Diseases: phoma scab, septoria leaf spot, armillaria root rot.
Buyers want: 1.3% volatile oil or higher, good colour.
