Culture Seed density: 400-600 seeds/gram   Exposure: full sun   Soil: deep, rich, moist, sandy, slightly alkaline, pH 7.3-7.8   Crop duration: 3-5 years
  Sowing rate: 3-4 kg/ha (direct), 5-10g/1000 plants (indirect).   Planting: soak seeds 2-3 hours in 30°C water or scarify before planting to weaken hard seed coat. Sow direct in spring or in deep plugs 12-16 weeks before field planting.   Field spacing: 70-90cm between rows x 45-90cm within rows.   Yield: G. glabra dry root 10-20t/ha (year 3-5).   Pests: few problems   Diseases: uromyces rust, cercospora blight.   Buyers want: minimum 4% glycyrrhizinic acid, minimum 20% water soluble extractive.  
  Sowing rate: 5-10g/1000plants.   Planting: soak seed in warm water (30°C) for 2-3 hours or scarify before sowing. Sow in flats or deep plugs 22-26 weeks before sale. Highly susceptible to damping-off; preventative application of damping-off control recommended.   Seeds to finished plugs: 12-16 weeks.   Plugs to saleable plants: 10 weeks.   Pests: spider mite   Diseases: damping-off.
