Dog and Bad Breath II

I have a 13 year old Maltese who has the worst breath in the world. She has water around her heart and her trachea has a "kink" in it (as her Vet told us). Is it possible that food is getting trapped in the "kink" and is rotting causing her bad breath? She has always eaten a commercial canned food. She does have bad teeth. I did have them cleaned once but it is so expensive to do that very often as it is considered a surgical procedure. What can I do to eliminate the problem?

Please see the posting on this website (www.richters.com) entitled, "Dog and Bad Breath". It would be my belief that your dog has bad breath because she is not digesting her food properly. there might be several reasons for this: first, most commercial foods do not contain adequate nutrition and second, your dog’s digestive system may be weak. The posting mentioned above will help you find some recipes for a good, homemade diet. Given that she has a heart condition, I hesitate to add more recommendations to the list without knowing if she is on any prescription drugs, as many herbs can interact with pharmaceuticals. However, the increased nutrition that she will receive from her new diet should help strengthen her generally as well as improve her digestion and the state of her teeth.
