Herb Growing Business in Eastern Ontario

I’m about to jump into the herb growing /marketing business. I’ve had a fair amount of practise growing herbs in our back yard for the past 16 years, I’ve got all the "how to" books, I’ve purchased land just west of Perth Ontario, where I have built a log home, and have 17 acres of sandy loam soil.

I have a sales and marketing background (I was in my younger years a super salesman), I was an entertainer (still am) most of my 57 years and I have mounted large public trade and consumer shows in Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal. AND recently I’ve been able to convince a Federal Government department the I’m a good bet and was able to get some financial assistance from them. (Told you I was a good salesman.)

My question.

Where can I go (in Canada preferably) to get 4" square plastic pots at wholesale? I’ve come up with a unique marketing idea that requires this specific size and shape. Can you help me?

I assume you mean empty pots for potting up. There are horticultural supply companies in most regions. In the Toronto area, for example, Plant Products sells pots made by Kord Plastics and others. I am not sure what companies exist in the Ottawa or Kingston areas, but no doubt there are some. I am sure Plant Products delivers in your area so you can call them (Plant Products, 310 Orenda Rd, Brampton, ON, L6T1G1, 905-793-7000).

Also, I’ve purchased plants and seeds from Richters in the past and will be purchasing a quantity of plug trays from you in 2002. Can I get these trays if I just arrive at your site or should I order in advance?

You must order in advance to be sure to get what you want. Supplies are always tight during the busy spring season, so it is guaranteed that not all varieties will be available if you just come and take your chances. You can contact our commercial department (commercial@richters.com) for details on what is available and when.

I know there are variables that affect the times of availability, but approximately when would plants like sage, basil, thyme, rosemary, oregano and chives be available for pick up in plug trays.

Generally, allow at least eight weeks.
