I am new to growing herbs. A friend gave me an herb pot with all kinds of herbs but I am not sure about when to cut them or where to cut them to keep from killing the plant. My basil looks like it is going to "flow" and I am not sure what to do. I live in Maine, USA and I would love to keep them going.

You are the perfect candidate to take advantage of the huge amount of information that we have posted on our web-site. Go to www.richters.com , click on "Magazine Rack" in the "News&Info" section and Scroll down to "Growing Herbs Indoors" by Conrad Richter. It is an excellent reference.

As far as harvesting herbs, click on the "Q&A" section and type in "Harvesting". Lots of questions and answers will come up on that topic.

Your "flowing" basil is getting light from only one direction and is bending towards it. Harvest the top one third of the plant and try to place the pot in strong direct overhead light. This should make the new growth go straight up.
