What herbs are good for the prevention of gout? Also what herbs are good for nephrotic syndrome - a kidney disease and hypertension. I am currently taking medication for each of these.

We have previously answered questions about herbs for gout. Please see our website at www.richters.com and search for "gout" or use the following link: http://www.richters.com/show.cgi?page=./QandA/Medicinal/19980906-7.html

Nephrotic syndrome is a condition of kidney damage with protein leakage into the urine, causing low levels of the protein albumin in the blood. Other signs and symptoms are swelling and high blood cholesterol. The cause of nephrotic syndrome is most often diabetes or high blood pressure. Nephrotic syndrome can also be caused by other health conditions that cause kidney damage. It is important to work with a medical practitioner to investigate and treat the cause. Serious kidney disease should be treated by a medical doctor, preferably along with a clinical herbalist who has experience in kidney conditions.

In China, the herbs Astragalus mongholicus and Angelica sinensis (dong quai) are traditionally used for nephrotic syndrome. Recent animal studies have shown their effectiveness is protecting the kidney from damage.

Herbalist Jonathan Treasure has published an article on the use of nettle seed to improve kidney function.
